Christmas Ornament
Paper Casting Project
Use a pure white paper casting from a Rycraft cookie stamp design
to create unique and charming Christmas ornaments for your tree or as a gift!
Materials Needed
1 Rycraft cookie stamp or craft stamp #220 – Rocking Horse
100% cotton linter) (Rycraft Cotton Linter)
2 paper castings* of design #220 – Rocking Horse (see Basic Paper Casting Instructions)
1 crochet or tatted coily or snowflake, stiffened (see How to Stiffen Doilies)
Clear acrylic varnish
Optional: Acrylic paints of your choice
Optional: Glitter
Optional: Ribbon to weave through doily
Ribbon, thread or clear fishing line to be used as a hanger
Note: Doilies can be purchased at the craft store or fabric store, especially at Christmastime. Look for small doilies in the doll-making section of your craft store.
Glue
*Note: Alternately, the casting for this project may be made from clay instead of paper (see Basic Clay Casting Instructions).
Instructions
1. Apply a coat of varnish to the castings and let dry. This is necessary to stiffen the castings and also to protect them from the water in the paints (if you paint the design) so the design doesn’t turn back into mush pulp.
2. Apply a coat of varnish to the already stiffened doily to make it stronger and block it out (stretch it out to the size you want on a cork board or your ironing board and pin it into place) until dry.
3. Optional: Paint the design on the castings, one color at a time, and let dry between coats (to prevent the colors from bleeding into each other).
4. Optional: Add varnish to areas on the castings where you want glitter, then sprinkle glitter on while varnish is still wet. Let it dry. Then apply a final coat of varnish to secure the glitter.
5. Glue 2 medallions to the doily, one on each side.
6. Optional: Weave ribbon through the holes in the doily for added decoration.
7. Make a loop of ribbon, thread or clear fishing line and tie a knot. Glue it onto the top of the ornament and let it dry thoroughly before hanging.
